Top 5 Goalies of All-time

Since Martin Brodeur broke the wins record previously held by Patrick Roy people have taken to calling him the greatest goalie ever.  This to me is a sham as Brodeur isn't on the top 5 and has no business being in the discussion.  To say he is the best is a slap in the face to the 5 individuals I have on my list.  You may agree or disagree with me but in the end these 5 goalies will always be better than Brodeur.

Here is my list of the Top 5 Goalies of All-Time

5.  Denis Lemieux - Lemieux was the French Canadian goalie for the Charlestown Chiefs.  Lemieux was well known for his unorthodox style and his inability to speak English very well but in the net there were none more feared than Denis Lemieux.

Aside from being an amazing tender he also was very knowledgeable about the game itself.  Take this perfect definition of icing, "icing happen when the puck come down, bang you know, before the other guys you know. Nobody there, you know. My arm go comes up then the game stop then start up."

4.  Julie "The Cat" Gaffney - Julie was the first female ever to play goal for the US National Junior Ice Hockey team.  She played for team USA during the Junior Goodwill Games but was relegated to the bench for perennial favorite Greg Goldberg.

Not only did she break the sex barrier by  being the first women to play she was also very talented.  Gaffney didn't play a minute the whole tournament but was selected to face Gunner Stall of Iceland in the shoot of the championship game.  She of course stepped up and made a huge glove said that will forever live in legend.  For these reasons and more The Cat is #4.

Also she was pretty hot.

3. Clark - Clark is not as well known as some of the others on this list but believe me he is one hell of a goalie.  Clark was a 3-time MVP of the Saskatchewan Moose Lodge Hockey League (SMLHL) but is better known for his transition into another sport.

Clark was tired of dominating the SMLHL and felt he needed a bigger challenge so he tried his hand at baseball. Here is a video of Clark's exploits on the diamond and if after watching this if you feel like he doesn't deserve to be on this list then let me know and I will come Ric Flair chop the crap out of you.

2.  "Skank" Marden - This guy was a nobody living in a small town in Alaska when he was called upon to play net against the New York Rangers.  That's right he was the goalie in Mystery Alaska.  He shut down the Rangers in the 1st and 3rd periods and ony gave up 5 goals against a professional hockey team.

Find me anyone in whatever town you live in that could hold the Rangers to 5 goals.  You can't!  This is a remarkable feat that deserves much more recognition that it gets.

1.  Greg Goldberg - Was there any ever doubt?  Not only did this overweight kid lead the Mighty Ducks to the District 5 championship but he also won gold at the Junior Goodwill Games and helped his team beat the varsity team at Eden Hall Academy.  Not to mention he was everyone on the teams best friend.

Remember in the Eden Hall game that Goldberg was not in net but instead scored the game winning goal with time expiring to become the hero of the whole team.  Here he shows that not only can he stop every puck shot at him but he can also score with the best of them.  Clutch.

That is a resume worthy of the Hall of Fame.

So the next time Brodeur records a shutout or plays a great game just remember that while he may be good he couldn't hold the jock of these 4 guys and the bra of the 1 girl.
